My French Breakfast radishes have taken off in my vegetable garden this hot summer in Murrieta, CA. They are beautiful round in root shape but most are oblong and two to four inches in length.

The 411/History
These beauties are known to make a yummy French snack /sandwich for children on bread and butter. Also, before the French Revolution a bagatelle patch of radishes meant you had no money left and the word RADISH then  became used as a slang for un sou (a penny in old currency) soon later the le franc was introduced. In the French culture and language small fruits and vegetables were once known to illustrate things that had little value as a penny. I can tell you these French Breakfast Radishes are worth bucks in so many ways!

As an artist, I love the vibrant vivid fuchsia-red on top and then how it bleeds at the ends into a  bright white tip. Topped with edible, leafy greens (easy to Saute' with garlic, onions, and spices of your choice). French Breakfast radishes are very crisp and offer a mildly spicy flavor. I enjoy serving them whole with the tops on a tiny sprinkle of sea salt , good herb butter, along with a French baguette, sliced and lightly toasted or with your favorite crackers. oh and a very chilled glass of Champagne or Dry Rose' Wine from Trader Joe's.

Seasons
French Breakfast radishes are usually available year-round.
Nutritional Value

French Breakfast radishes contain Vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, folate, and potassium. Natural medicine practitioners recommend radishes for their ability to promote healthy digestion. French Breakfast radishes also contain glucosinolates, which have been shown to be beneficial in the prevention of certain cancers and are what give radishes their distinct peppery flavor.
